SFI30119 Certificate III in Aquaculture

Who is the Qualification for?

SFI30119 Certificate III in Aquaculture includes assessment in the workplace and is offered by Seafood & Maritime Training (SMT) for workers who are actively employed in the finfish or shellfish aquaculture industry (including hatcheries) in jobs like the following:

  • farm attendant
  • technician
  • leading hand
  • shift or team leader
  • supervisor

Qualification delivery arrangements

The units of competency in SFI30119 Certificate III in Aquaculture are delivered and assessed in a set of SMT courses (refer following table), with some assessments conducted in the workplace. 

As part of the structure of the qualification, 12 units are completed via the short courses required*.

The remaining 4 units are made up from other short courses selected when negotiating the training plan, that will be supported by the employer and SMT.

How will I be assessed?

Participants in SMT’s SFI30119 Certificate III in Aquaculture will be assessed:

  • during off-the-job training sessions by demonstrating their skills and answering questions.
  • demonstrating their skills and answering questions in the workplace

 

Participants will also be required to work with their workplace supervisor to maintain a SFI30119 Certificate III in Aquaculture Workplace Logbook.

How long will the Qualification take to complete?

Most people who enrol in SFI30119 Certificate III in Aquaculture take around two years to complete the qualification.

What equipment will I need?

All the equipment, training and assessment materials that participants need will be provided by SMT and/or participants’ employers.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own writing materials or electronic device.

What support will I get during my training?

Each participant will have regular contact with SMT’s Trainer/Assessor and staff whilst attending off the job training, including regular (2 per year) site visits to monitor the participant’s progress. 

During workplace visits the SMT representative will work with the participant to:

  • discuss planned training and assessment.
  • discuss progress and provide feedback, including:
    • completing any outstanding assessments; and
    • checking that training schedules are current and reviewing the training plan

Qualification requirements

To receive a SFI30119 Certificate III in Aquaculture participants are required to complete 16 units of competency as follows:

  • 3 core units and 13 elective units
How will I choose which courses to take in my Qualification?

Every participant in SFI30119 Certificate III in Aquaculture will have a Training Plan developed, this is negotiated with the Trainee, Employer and SMT. Participants and their employers select the courses the participant will take and prepare their Training Plan during a meeting with an SMT representative.

All participants must attend and successfully complete the following compulsory courses for either Shellfish or Finfish.
