Long Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency

Who is the course for?

This course involves the skills and knowledge required to:

  • Transmit and receive information by marine radio, including using marine very high frequency (VHF) and high frequency (HF) radio according to regulations
  • Carry out user maintenance and fault-finding procedures on radio equipment and power supplies
  • Operate emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs), search and rescue radar transponders (SARTs), automatic identification system search and rescue transmitters (AIS-SARTs), AIS man overboard (AIS-MOB) devices and digital selective calling MOB (DSC-MOB) devices.

 

This unit applies to people working in the maritime industry in the capacity of:

  • master on commercial vessels <80 m in length within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or
  • chief mate or deck watchkeeper on a vessel <80 m in length within the EEZ.This course is for people who are required to hold a Long Range Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) issued by the Office of Maritime Communications (OMC) in order to operate marine VHF and MF-HF radios.

What will I learn?

This course covers topics including:

  • features and operation of marine communications equipment including VHF and MF-HF radios, EPIRBs, DSC and SARTs
  • procedures for making routine, distress, urgency and safety calls
  • simple maintenance practices and 
  • understanding of regulations.

How will I be trained and assessed?

SMT’s training and assessment is very practical and is conducted in a classroom environment, activities will include:

  • written assessments of underpinning knowledge
  • verbal assessments demonstrating understanding of actions to be taken during routine and emergency scenarios
  • practical simulated activities using required equipment.

Course requirements

There are no formal prerequisites for this course. SMT recommends the completion of Elements of Shipboard Safety and Coxswain Deck prior.

How long is the course?

This is a 1-day course (9am – 5pm).

All the equipment, training and assessment materials that participants need will be provided by SMT.

What sort of credential(s) do I get if I successfully complete the course?

If you successfully complete all the written, verbal and practical assessments you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment issued by SMT for:

  • MARC043 Transmit and receive information by marine radio

 

A copy of the statement of attainment will be forwarded to the Office of Maritime Communications (OMC) . The OMC will assess this and if successful will issue a Long-Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency. 

For eligible Tasmanian residents, this training is subsidised by the Department of State Growth, Tasmania.
