Who is the course for?

The course is designed primarily for participants who are undertaking a Traineeship and is for workers who are employed in the seafood and aquaculture industry with some experience in jobs like the following:

  • aquaculture attendants or technicians
  • hatchery attendant 
  • leading hand
  • deckhand
  • skipper.

What will I learn?

This course contains practical and theory in the following topics: 

  • basic food handling and food safety
  • maintaining the temperature of seafood.

How will I be trained and assessed?

SMT’s training and assessment is very practical and is conducted in a classroom environment. activities include: 

  • verbal and written assessments* of underpinning knowledge;
  • practical demonstrations
  • workplace logbook assessment.

Things you need to know

Course requirements

To enrol in this course, you must be employed in the aquaculture industry. There are no formal prerequisites for this course.

How long is the course?

This is a 1-day course (9am – 5pm).

All equipment, training and assessment materials that participants need will be provided by SMT.

Participants must bring their own writing materials.

What sort of credential(s) do I get if I successfully complete the course?

Participants who successfully complete all the written, practical and workplace assessments will receive the 2 following units issued as part of their qualification:

Aquaculture specialist units:

  • SFIXSI101 Apply basic food handling and safety practices
  • SFIXSI202 Maintain the temperature of seafood
