Trainer Profile: Scott Strong – A Lifelong Career on the Water

Meet SMT trainer – Scott Strong

For Scott Strong, a career at sea was inevitable – it’s in his blood.

With a family background in boat building and fishing, Scott began working on fishing boats while still in high school. Over the past 36 years, he has navigated his way through the maritime industry, starting with his Coxswain Certificate and progressing to a Diploma in Nautical Science and a Master 45 Qualification.

This career path has allowed Scott to undertake daring international voyages and explore the pristine Australian coastline.  A highlight for Scott has been undertaking the role of master on a 9600 gross ton vessel leading a crew of 36 industry professionals.

As a trainer and assessor for SMT Scott understands how having a practiced trainer can make the learning journey easier for the student. Having spent time on the other side of the desk as a student Scott appreciates the challenges leaners can face when studying in the maritime industry and knows the benefits of learning from an experienced trainer with firsthand skills and expertise on the ocean. Scott enjoys seeing people up and coming in Maritime Industry and taking pride in finding their career paths. Teaching allows him to stay current and involved with maritime teaching practices.

Teaching also allows Scott to stay connected with the latest maritime practices. His passion for the industry has even sparked an interest in his 8-year-old son, who recently completed his first delivery voyage from Sydney to Hobart aboard Scott’s private vessel. However, Scott emphasizes that it’s ultimately his son’s choice whether to follow in the family’s maritime footsteps.

Scott’s wealth of experience and dedication to the maritime field are invaluable to SMT and its students, who greatly benefit from his knowledge and commitment to fostering the next generation of Coxswains and Masters.
