Ellen Duke is a third-generation oyster farmer who began her journey in the industry at 17, working in oyster hatcheries. At 18, she joined Seafood and Maritime Training (SMT) as a trainee, setting the foundation for her career in aquaculture.
She pursued Certificate III and IV in Aquaculture at SMT before earning her Trainer and Assessor qualification. Interested about giving back to the industry, she later joined the SMT training team to support future students, just as she had been supported during her own studies. Ellen has since furthered her education, completing a master’s in business administration.
Ellen is currently the Commercial Project Officer at Yumbah Aquaculture Ltd, where she manages projects, conducts audits, and explores new ventures in oysters, mussels, and abalone for the company. She thrives on the variety her role offers and the challenges it presents.

As a trainer, Ellen specializes in Shellfish Husbandry, Waders, First Aid, Food Safety, and assists in Certificate IV Aquaculture workshops. She enjoys engaging with newcomers to the industry, offering fresh perspectives and sharing her expertise.
Beyond her career, Ellen is a devoted mother to two young children (3.5 years and 16 months). When she gets some free time, Ellen enjoys spending time gardening and unwinding with a good book.
