Seafood & Maritime Training

On water School Program has kicked off

Check out a new training program between SMT and regional high schools and how we can support your training.

SMT has partnered with various schools and Trade Training Centres to offer Certificates I and II in Aquaculture and Certificate I in Maritime.  These partnerships will allow Tasmanian schools to access vocational-level trainers and industry-based training courses creating outcomes that can lead to real job opportunities for students.

The first Deckhand Skill training session for Reece High School students started in March 2023. This included 3 days of Vessel Induction Training at the school, followed by 2 days of Safety at Sea Training completed at SMT in Hobart.

The program has been specifically developed to help students access job opportunities provided by seafood employers in their region and create pathways into the wider seafood and maritime industry.

The courses help students learn the skills necessary to work safely on a commercial vessel.

On completing the courses, students achieve a recognised licence and qualification, which is not only important to potential employers but excellent recognition for the resume.

Those students who successfully complete all training and assessment will receive a Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal).  Plus they will have completed the Australian Maritime Safety Authorities AMPA requirement for the issuance of a Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency.
