MAR30921 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24m Near Coastal)

Who is the qualification for?

With this certificate you can command a commercial vessel less than 24 metres long.

This certificate will allow you to work as:

  • Master on commercial vessels up to 24 metres long within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ)
  • Chief mate or deck watchkeeper on vessels up to 45 metres long within the EEZ
  • Chief mate or deck watchkeeper on vessels up to 100 metres long in inshore waters.

Qualification requirements

To receive a MAR30921 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal) a participant is required to complete all the following 15 Core Units of Competency shown in the table below:

MARH016 Plan and navigate a passage for a vessel up to 80 metres

MARH017 Use wheelhouse equipment for safe navigation

MARI004 Observe regulations to ensure safe operation of a vessel up to 80 metres

MARJ007 Monitor environmental management on a vessel

MARK008 Manoeuvre a vessel up to 24 metres within Near Coastal waters

MARN009 Perform seamanship operations on board a vessel up to 24 metres

MARF027 Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment

 

Elements of Shipboard Safety

MARF028 Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel

MARF029 Meet work health and safety requirements

MARF030 Survive at sea using survival craft

There are no formal prerequisites for this qualification, however, some of these training courses have been designed for participants with considerable experience in working with vessels.

Meeting AMSA requirements within your training

SMT has incorporated AMSA’s Mandated Practical Assessments into its training and assessment strategy of each course. 

This means by successfully completing a course you are meeting that component of AMSA’s training requirements for the issuance of a Certificate of Competency.

Qualification outcome

At the successful completion of all the Core Units of Competency you will be issued with a Certificate for a MAR30921 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal).  

Where SMT has delivered and assessed all the Units of Competency that lead to the issuance of this qualification you will have also met AMSA’s Mandated Practical Assessments requirement for the issuance of a Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal Certificate of Competency.

Please note that AMSA’s Mandated Practical Assessments outcomes expire 12 months after the date the assessor signs the AMPA cover page.  Please see AMSA website www.amsa.gov.au or contact the SMT office for more information. 

 

Additional AMSA Master <24m (NC) Certificate of Competency Certification requirements.

In addition to the Certificate and AMPA outcome issued by SMT, AMSA certification will require:

  • a Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency
  • sea service consisting of:
    • 120 days qualifying sea service and a completed AMSA approved task book

or

    • 600 days qualifying sea service
  • meeting the medical and eyesight requirements specified in the NSCV Part D
