MAR30821 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal)

Who is the Qualification for?

This qualification is suitable for people who wish to work as a Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal in the maritime industry in the capacity of:

  • Chief engineer on vessels with inboard engines with propulsion power up to 750 kilowatts within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
  • Chief or second engineer on a vessel with outboard engines with unlimited propulsion power within the EEZ.
  • Second engineer on vessels with inboard engines with propulsion power up to 1500 kilowatts within the EEZ.
  • An assistant under the general supervision of the chief engineer.
  • In the engine room of a vessel with propulsion power up to 3000 kilowatts

Qualification requirements

To receive a MAR30821 – Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2) Near Coastal) a participant is required to complete all of the following 17 Core Units of Competency shown in the table below:

MARJ006 Follow environmental work practices

MARF027 Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment




Elements of Shipboard Safety

MARF028 Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel

MARF029 Meet work health and safety requirements

MARF030 Survive at sea using survival craft

There are no formal prerequisites for this qualification, however, some of these training courses have been designed for participants with considerable experience in working with vessel system and engines.

Meeting AMSA requirements within your training

SMT has incorporated AMSA’s Mandated Practical Assessments into its training and assessment strategy of each course. 

This means by successfully completing a course you are meeting that component of AMSA’s training requirements for the issuance of a Certificate of Competency.

Qualification outcome

At the successful completion of all the Core Units of Competency you will be issued with a Certificate for a MAR30821 – Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal).  

Where SMT has delivered and assessed all the Units of Competency that lead to the issuance of this qualification you will have also met AMSA’s Mandated Practical Assessments requirement for the issuance of a Marine Engine Driver II Near Coastal Certificate of Competency.

Please note that AMSA’s Mandated Practical Assessments outcomes expire 12 months after the date the assessor signs the AMPA cover page.  Please see AMSA website www.amsa.gov.au or contact the SMT office for more information. 

 

Additional AMSA Master <24m (NC) Certificate of Competency Certification requirements.

In addition to the Certificate and AMPA outcome issued by SMT, AMSA certification will require:

  • Sea service consisting of:
    • at least 180 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel with inboard diesel propulsion power ≥150 kW and a completed AMSA approved task book.
    • at least 90 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel with inboard diesel propulsion power ≥150 kW while holding a workshop skills equivalent qualification and a completed AMSA approved task book.

or

    • at least 360 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel with inboard diesel propulsion power ≥150 kW;
    • at least 180 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel with inboard diesel propulsion power ≥150 kW while holding a workshop skills equivalent qualification.
    • meeting the medical and eyesight requirements specified in the NSCV Part D
